Summary of Functions

Provides enforcement services to the Kalispel Tribe of Indians Law and Order Codes, focusing primarily on Chapter 12 - Hunting and fishing codes. Enforces Tribal, Federal, and State laws. Investigates crimes and violations against all cultural and natural resource violations on the Kalispel Indian Reservation and its properties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Kalispel Tribal Conservation Law Enforcement Officers are responsible for the enforcement of all Federal, Tribal and State Laws adopted by the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. Conservation Law Enforcement Officers will be fully commissioned Law Enforcement Officers and will be responsible for the protection, safety and well-being of all person(s) and property under the jurisdiction of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians.
  • The Conservation Law Enforcement Officer will be tasked with the protection of all cultural and natural resources of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians. Conservation Law Enforcement Officers will actively patrol all waters within the jurisdiction of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, which includes, but is not limited to: Inland Lakes & Ponds, Rivers, Streams & Creeks, Wetlands.
  • Actively patrol all lands within the jurisdiction of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, which includes, but is not limited to: Lands within the exterior boundaries of the Kalispel Indian Reservation. Lands outside the exterior boundaries of the Kalispel Indian Reservation that are owned or has cultural and/or legal interests by the Kalispel Tribe of Indians
  • Assist with the preservation and enforcement of all laws governing the use and protection of the Kalispel Tribal Hunting and Fishing rules and regulations. In addition, Conservation Law Enforcement Officers will assist the Department of Natural Resources with the preservation and management of all natural resources of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians.
  • Assist and work cooperatively with all agencies assigned with the protection and enforcement of Tribal, Federal and State Laws. These agencies will include, but are not limited to, Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Kalispel Tribal Police Department, and Washington and Idaho State and local County Law Enforcement agencies when applicable.
  • Testifies in the appropriate court on behalf of the Tribe to further the chance of prosecution or to protect the Tribe’s assets.
  • Provides continuous public relations with other law enforcement and public agencies through presence, education, and assistance.
  • Provide Hunter Safety Training to Kalispel Tribal and Community Members.
  • Work with the Kalispel Tribe of Indians Hunting and Fishing Advisory Board for code updates and education to the community.
  • Participate in public outreach events on behalf of the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, the Kalispel Tribal Police Department and the Conservation Law Enforcement Program. (examples would be public group discussions, school/classroom presentations, Big Horn show, etc..)

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education
  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED). (Mandatory)
  • AA Degree preferred but not a requirement of the position.
Experience
  • Preference would be at least 1 year law enforcement experience in military or civilian agency. But is not necessary to apply.
  • Prior experience in Natural Resource Science / Wildlife Technology strongly preferred.
Skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills required.
  • Strong listening and interpersonal skills required.
  • Must have strong reasoning skills, good judgment, and the ability to choose the most appropriate action in a given circumstance.
Other Requirements
  • Must successfully attend and graduate an approved Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one year of appointment. The ability to be certified with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the State of Washington Basic Law Enforcement Standards and maintain those certifications.
  • Become ACCESS Level 1 Certified within 30 days of hire. Complete online training and testing every year to maintain ACCESS Certification.
  • No Felony Convictions
  • No Misdemeanor Convictions within the last 5 years.
  • No Criminal Traffic Convictions within the last 5 years.
  • Valid driver’s license and be eligible for automobile insurance.
  • Valid Washington State Boater Safety Education Card
  • Will be required to attain a Hunter Education Instructor Certification within one year of hiring.
  • This position may require significant amounts of work to be performed outside general business hours. Significant weekends, shiftwork and on-call status are also required.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification.
Physical Demands
  • Requires the ability to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 60 pounds.
  • Significant portions of the job require extended sedentary periods in a patrol vehicle; constant work with computers, including extended periods of keyboarding; and repetitive motion of hands and wrists.
  • This position requires significant amounts of standing or walking.
  • This position requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle to include operation at excessive speeds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to tobacco smoke, moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The worker is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions and to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Testing Procedure

All excepted applicants will be required to pass a written and physical agility examination . Those who pass the first phase will continue to the Oral Board Interview followed by the Polygraph and Psychological exams as required by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
