Whitaker Construction , founded in 1953, has over 70 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 600 employees and nearly 70 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

JOB SUMMARY:

A Heavy Haul Truck Driver is a specialized job involving the transportation of heavy equipment for the construction industry. Heavy Haul Truck Drivers will deliver all types of construction equipment to various job locations safely and without incidents. This position is responsible for maintaining proper paperwork.

RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES:

  • Comply with all safety policies and procedures, and standards of safety.
  • Ability to operate, load, and unload equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Thorough operational knowledge and skills of operating a commercial motor vehicle and related equipment to be operated.
  • Operate semi-truck with trailers, according to state laws. Transport load over required route, to proper destination observing all traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Determine most efficient route based on load weight, road, and traffic conditions.
  • Must keep time and material records through drivers daily logs.
  • Must follow verbal and written instruction.
  • Must have maneuvering and backing skills.
  • Connect and disconnect trailers.
  • Monitor trip permits, overweight and length permits. Ensure proper documentation is on hand during haul.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on trucks, pursuant to DOT regulations.
  • Maintain vehicle to ensure safe conditions; includes daily inspections of tires, lights, signals, glass, etc. Vehicle fluids and tire air pressures must be checked and serviced daily.
  • Ensure vehicle is ready for next day business, including fuel fills and pre-loads, whenever possible.
  • Maintain company truck and trailer appearance. Schedule necessary repairs.
  • Show constant awareness of personal safety, and the safety of all co-workers, and surroundings.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.
  • Observe all traffic laws.

QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred. Any vocational training is strongly desired.
  • Those with an education and/or work-related credential from a secondary or post-secondary educational system will be given preferred interview status (Precision Exams, NOCTE, etc.).
  • A minimum of 2-5 years of experience hauling heavy equipment and oversized loads, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a Class A CDL with Tankers and Hazmat endorsements.
  • Must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) physical and medical requirements and pass substance abuse screening, as a safety sensitive employee.
  • A clean driving record is required.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Reliable transportation to get to and from work.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.
  • Able to sit, walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, feel, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, and job hazards.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Ability to do physical labor and other strenuous physical tasks.
