The following essential function will guide you on this journey and provide clear directions as to what is expected from this position.

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general direction, the Investigator shall organize and conduct investigations as necessary to assist the assigned case attorney in conducting the zealous defense of indigent clients of the Snohomish County Public Defender Association.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Interviews State and defense witnesses which may include law enforcement, complainants, and general witnesses to gather information on events surrounding cases.
  • Visits crime scenes to gather information including taking photos, measurements, videos, or other information, as necessary.
  • Communicates regularly with attorney(s) designated to assigned cases.
  • Reviews and becomes familiar with evidence submitted on cases.
  • Pulls civil and criminal records for all parties involved which may include client, complaining witnesses, law enforcement or other witnesses.
  • Types reports of contacts and findings including statements, scene description and analysis of evidence.
  • Updates contact information for involved persons i.e. skip trace parties who may have disappeared.
  • Coordinates with attorney to assist in trial preparation as needed.
  • Duties may include door knocking or other such activities to find other potential witnesses.
  • Reviews other records medical, school, or other for any involved parties.
  • Serves subpoenas for witnesses and records.
  • Orders 911 tapes and CAD reports
  • May testify in court and visit jail.
  • Provide assistance to Level I investigators and Intern Investigators.
  • Maintain knowledge of current investigative practices and procedures.
  • Prioritize collaboration and cooperation in your interactions with all Defenders. Hold yourself accountable when contributing to differences in power and identity, and act in ways which honor the authenticity, value, and dignity of each Defender.
  • Seek to cultivate constructive relationships with court stakeholders for the benefit of clients, and represent SCPDA with mindfulness, compassion, and consideration towards others.
  • Advance and/or progress toward recognizing and naming racism and other oppressions within our work.
  • Intentionally engage in antiracism learning using a framework (example: Awareness, Knowledge, Skills, and Action).
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Participate in meetings as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree and/or equivalent criminal system or investigative experience.
  • Able to build new capacities for learning and seek opportunities to expand your approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to align your actions with the rules and guidelines of professional conduct when interacting with stakeholders in the court system.
  • Ability to curiously explore and incorporate perspectives different from your own.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and effectively implement a plan for investigating assigned cases.
  • Strong computer skills including e-mail, word processing and on-line research.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with various people throughout the investigative process.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing and produce clear, concise written reports for legal documentation and can testify in court in a direct, clear, and concise manner.
  • Able to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to speak and converse in Spanish not required but enhances ability to perform duties.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule as may be required by cases including work during nights and weekends.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered during performance of duties.
  • Working vehicle, valid Washington state driver's license, and insurance required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequent standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to work at computer or desk area for extended periods of time.
  • Requires ability, with or without accommodation, to use computer screen and other electronic devices, input information, read and interpret data from the screen.
  • Other hazards are those present in a typical office or courtroom.
