Lab Assistant (LAB AST 2)

Job Summary

The role of this position is to provide general laboratory support in a specialized analytical chemistry environment, under the supervision of the principle investigator. A significant portion of time will be spent in the routine preparation and analysis of biological samples for quantitative analysis using sophisticated instrumentation including gas and liquid mass spectrometers and tandem mass spectrometers. The individual will provide training and oversight to students and colleagues with respect to sample handling, preparation and data analysis. The individual will also be responsible for routine assessment of instrument performance and simple preventative maintenance of advanced instrumentation under the guidance of senior laboratory staff and the principle investigator. The individual will aid in the general maintenance of the laboratory by following appropriate safety protocols, logging incoming samples into the laboratory records, and supporting the maintenance of a clean working environment. Prioritization of efforts will be made by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Relevant academic coursework or equivalent industry experience.
  • 6 months of quantitative analytical chemistry experience
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail are essential.
  • Proficiency in sample preparation for trace organic analysis using internal standard methodology, solid phase extraction, liquid/liquid extraction, and strict quality assurance guidelines.
  • Experience with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), gas chromatography with mass spectral detection, and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), including HPLC and electrospray ionization source maintenance.
  • Skilled in using analytical software for quantitative multi-residue analyses (e.g., Sciex Multiquant, Agilent MassHunter).
  • Working knowledge of mass spectral techniques and analytical high-performance liquid chromatography; Ability to work in a collaborative team environment, including availability for occasional weekend and holiday work as needed.


Preferred Qualifications

  • More than 6 months of quantitative analytical chemistry experience with LC-MS/MS systems in a research environment.
  • Experience with Sciex instrumentation and software.
  • Skilled in using Sciex Multiquant and/or Sciex OS
  • Experience with multiresidue analyses (20 or more anlaytes/assay)
  • Experience with Internal Standard-based quantitative methods

Department Overview


The UC Davis Genome Center in the College of Biological Sciences, coordinates inter-disciplinary research in the areas of genomics, metabolomics, proteomics and bioinformatics, and is involved in the training of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Annual funding is approximately $25 million from multiple sources. The Genome Center consists of 16 resident faculty and 28 non-resident faculty with appointments in various departments within the Colleges of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Engineering, the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, the School of Medicine and the School of Veterinary Medicine. The population of the Genome Center and Cores averages approximately 225 faculty, staff, students, professional researchers, visiting faculty, and postdoctoral scholars.
