Litigation Legal Assistant
Our client is a mid-sized Chicago law firm seeking an experienced Litigation Legal Assistant to join its high-volume insurance defense team. This full-time position offers up to $80,000 annually with a bonus, a competitive benefits package, and the opportunity to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
Role Overview:
As a Litigation Legal Assistant, you will support a dynamic group of attorneys handling high-volume insurance defense and civil litigation matters. The role involves daily drafting, reviewing, and filing of motions, pleadings, and legal documents. You will work on a broad range of tasks with substantial case management responsibilities across 250-500 cases per attorney. This role requires in-office availability for trials, hearings, and project support, particularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but is otherwise hybrid.
The ideal candidate has a minimum of 3 years of experience in insurance defense or civil litigation on the defense side, extensive familiarity with electronic filing and document review, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Training will be provided on a Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday schedule for the first 2-4 weeks, with a shift to regular in-office work on Tuesdays and Thursdays thereafter.
Key Responsibilities:
- Draft notices and prepare documents for state and federal court filings, focusing on asbestos and insurance defense cases
- Review, proofread, and format attorneys' motions, pleadings, and other legal documents daily
- Manage electronic filings and correspondence on state and federal court docketing systems
- Draft, finalize, and monitor court orders, preparing and tracking trial notices and status of entered orders
- Conduct heavy case management using case management systems and e-discovery software
- Correspond with opposing counsel and court clerks to coordinate hearings, motions, and courtesy copies
- Use Adobe Acrobat Pro and Microsoft Office Suite for document preparation and management
- Handle high-volume motion filing (15-30 per day) and support 5-7 attorneys at a time
- Assist with high-volume administrative tasks, focusing on case management and electronic filings without traditional scheduling or booking
Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in insurance defense or civil litigation (defense side, not plaintiff’s work)
- Proficiency in case management systems and e-discovery software, with experience in a high-volume practice such as workers' compensation, mass tort, or class action
- Strong familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Pro and MS Office applications
- Ability to work independently, managing high volumes of filings and case documentation efficiently
- Senior-level experience preferred; this is not an entry-level role
If you are detail-oriented, experienced with insurance defense case management, and thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume setting, we encourage you to submit your resume to Chelsea Johnson at [email protected]!
