Job Description JO B SUMMARY: To perform skilled work in the installation, repair, and servicing of locks on doors, files, desks, cabinets, and other equipment, and to make new or duplicate keys for such devices in support of the District maintenance program.
SUPERVISION: Positions in this classification are supervised by the Carpentry and Related Trades Supervisor. Work instructions are received from the Lead Carpenter.
Positions in this classification exercises no supervision.
Examples of Duties ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Repairs, replaces, installs and adjusts door locks, cabinet locks and hardware, padlocks, and other locking devices.
- Repairs, installs and adjusts all types of door closer and holders, including floor hinges.
- Determines optimal lock application for specific requirements and situation
- Repairs safes and safe locks.
- Keys and re-keys all types of locks and maintains keying record by means of computer equipment.
- Orders replacement parts as required.
- Uses key cutting machine to make keys by duplication or from key code.
- Moves lock pick in cylinder to open doors without keys.
- Prioritizes work tasks.
- Operates district vehicle to job locations.
- Performs job related duties as assigned.
Qualifications EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION/TRAINING (These are the minimum experience and education/training standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for examination.)
Successful completion of a state-approved locksmith apprenticeship.
-OR-
Three years of paid locksmith** experience which has included commercial or industrial locksmithing.
-AND-
High school graduation or the equivalent.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES/REGISTRATIONS (At the time of appointment and during employment)
A valid Class C California driver's license.*
*Must be submitted upon acceptance of offer of employment and maintained throughout employment in this classification.
**Activities limited to making a duplicate key from an existing key do not qualify as locksmith experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees in this classification are subject to emergency call backs at any time outside of their assigned work shift, including weekends and holidays; and assignment to a work shift on a rotating basis.

ADDITIONAL SALARY INFORMATION: This is a non-exempt position, Regular Classified Salary Range 41. Positions in this class work 8 hours 12 months. The probationary period for employees in this classification is six (6) months (or 130 working days of paid service).

THE EXAMINATION: - The examination process for recruitments may consist of one or any combination of the following: written examination; online examination; performance examination and/or physical agility examination; technical oral examination, scored on a job-related basis; supplemental questionnaire or training and experience evaluation, scored on a job-related basis.

POST Intermediate Certification: 6% to base pay
POST Advanced Certification: 8% to base pay
Associate degree: 5% to base pay
