Purpose: The Student Safety Monitor is part of the Operations Department which assists faculty and administration in providing a safe environment for our scholars. The Student Safety Monitor performs routine and non-routine safety functions in an assigned area or areas by following prescribed schedules set by the Operations Department. The Student Safety Monitor acts as a first responder to all First Aid/CPR calls on campus. The Student Safety Monitor will work under the direction of the Sr. Director of Operations and will have opportunities for on-the-job training and formal professional development. This role furthers the mission of Foundation Academies by providing a safe and orderly learning environment for students and staff members.

Salary Range: $34,000-$45,000 (with overtime opportunities available)

Safety and Compliance

Conducts daily walk-throughs in each building to identify and report any emergent safety concerns, as well as other items requiring attention. Partners with the Facilities Team to coordinate a response to immediate safety and/or operational concerns: facility damage, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc. Partners with the Operations/Facilities Team to ensure all areas are secure and issues and concerns are addressed proactively to avoid conflicts and escalations. Partners with school nurses and first responders coordinate a response to injured and ill students, staff, and visitors on school grounds. Coordinates safety drills and maintains the safety and security of the scholars, employees, visitors, and the property. Ensures that their respective campus holds 2 required safety/security drills monthly, including lockdown drills, fire drills, and evacuation drills During drills and emergencies, aids in the sweep of the building and then posts outside at designated congregation areas. Participate in post-drill debrief and corrective action planning.

Campus Monitoring and Visitor Oversight

Monitors, on a daily basis, all campus arrivals and dismissals, cafeterias, hallways, bathrooms, recess/play areas, parking lots and camera monitors. Provides traffic control during arrival, dismissal, and school events. Attends and monitors the behavior of students and adult visitors at a variety of school activities, including after school and weekend events. Effectively uses non-violent crisis intervention, anger management, and conflict resolution skills as necessary. Partner with school nurses and first responders in any medical situations requiring emergency response. Conduct Stay Put procedures as needed in these situations. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to ensure campus safety for students, employees, and visitors, including safeguarding equipment, materials, and facilities, and checking IDs for all persons entering campus buildings. Ensure that students in the cafeteria, recess, play areas, parking lots, and dismissal areas are monitored and acting in accordance with expectations set forth by the lead teacher or School Leader. Complies with and supports school regulations and policies for school security. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Partners with the Facilities Team to monitor and respond to all security alarm events and facility emergencies, being available on a flexible schedule as needed.

Other duties

Prepares written and electronic materials/reports for all safety and security incidents that occur. Completes incident reports in network SIS and defers major consequence judgment to Administration; assigns detentions as needed per school policy. In a limited capacity, may assist with resolving student attendance concerns. Act as a first responder to all First Aid/CPR calls on campus. Use data/information from prior school situations to create proactive plans to prevent similar situations from occurring again

Student Accountability and Safety:

  • 100% of time, all facility security issues are reported through the proper ticketing system for repairs and Sr. Director of Operations is notified to ensure that if temporary measures are needed, so they are addressed immediately
  • 2 Safety Drills (fire, lockdown, evacuation) are held monthly and logged appropriately to ensure compliance with state codes
  • 100% of students are accounted for at all times - If a student is missing from class, locate the student and follow up with the teacher.
  • 100% of students have passes when in halls. Students without passes should be issued consequences and referred to school administration when needed.
  • Less than 5% of student discipline infractions are below Tier 3 egregious behaviors. Report any concerns of possible student conflict to School Leadership so that they are addressed before any altercations that put students at risk of injury or harm
  • Actively work with School Leadership to help assist with reducing student absenteeism by 10%
  • 0 incidents of drugs or weapons at after-school events, and events open to the public

Control of School Access

  • 100% of staff and visitors in the building have a proper ID badge at all times. Anyone without a badge is addressed and the situation is remedied immediately.
  • 100% of visitors are logged in with the Main Office

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Be CPR/AED certified or willing to become CPR/AED certified within the first 60 days of employment.
  • 2+ years experience with security preferred. Additionally, working in a school setting or as a first responder is desired.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job, including walking around for at least 50% of the time
  • Possession of a valid NJ driver's license and reliable transportation
  • Valid SORA License
  • HS Graduate or equivalent
  • Pass the required criminal history background check and provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status
